TWO DEGREES MOBILE
In 2007, Tuaropaki Trust invested in the ‘2degrees’ parent company ‘NZ Communications'.
2degrees Mobile is a relatively new entrant to the telecommunications sector but it continues to build its customer base and successfully compete with the incumbents Telecom and Vodafone.
2degrees Mobile is well received in the New Zealand mobile market and was recently awarded best advertising promotion and best customer service in 2012.
TEAMTALK
In 2011, Tuaropaki Communications merged with the Timaru based Baycity Communications Limited (BayCity). Tuaropaki Communications took a 25.01% shareholding in the merged entity. As a result of the merge, BayCity became New Zealand's leading dedicated rural ISP and telecommunications provider, principally through its Farmside operation. The company affectively has 100% of the satellite market in New Zealand.
In December 2012 NZX listed company TeamTalk announced that they had entered into a conditional sale and purchase agreement to buy 100% of BayCity Communications Limited (BayCity). After a special shareholder meeting held in mid December, TeamTalk shareholders supported the acquisition and TeamTalk purchased 100% of BayCity.
As a result of the TeamTalk acquisition, Tuaropaki Communications Ltd holds a 5% shareholding in TeamTalk.
TeamTalk Ltd is New Zealand’s largest mobile radio company and dominates commercial mobile radio voice and data communications in New Zealand with 70% of the total market and nationwide coverage. The company is also a niche operator in the broadband space, in both fibre based and wireless, operating predominantly in the Wellington region with small operations in the Auckland CBD. The two major business segments (Mobile Radio and Broadband) account for roughly an even split of group revenues. The Broadband business is likely to be the growth driver for TeamTalk going forward.
